The land that eventually became Palm Beach Gardens was primarily cattle ranches, pine forests, and swamp land. Because of the great lush landscaping of the communities and city today, residents enjoy a variety of colors and types of flowers, plants, and trees that bloom throughout the year.

In 1959 wealthy landowner and insurance magnate, John D. MacArthur announced his plans to develop 4,000 acres of land into a "garden city" and build homes for 55,000 people. He chose the name Palm Beach Gardens after his first choice of Palm Beach City was denied by the Florida Legislature.

Residents have local access to Art and cultural opportunities that include Broadway performances and an award winning Art in Public Places program. The city adopted the Art in Public Places ordinance in 1989 and has procured quite a collection of outstanding artistic works. Dwyer High School are the local public high schools. The Upper School campus of The Benjamin School, a private school, is also located in Palm Beach Gardens. The Edward M. Eissey Campus located in Palm Beach Gardens is a community branch of the Palm Beach State College. It includes the Eissey Theater for the Performing Arts.
