In 1954 John D. MacArthur bought 2600 acres of land from Sir Harry Oakes out of which North Palm Beach in 1956 was officially incorporated as North Palm Beach and consisted of mangrove swamps and farm land. He began immediately dredging and developing the area's swamp land creating waterfront cul-de-sacs. The John D. MacArthur State Park, which preserves some of the land originally purchased, is located nearby.
Sir Harry Oakes' castle type home, located in those acres that MacArthur had purchased, became the first clubhouse of the village's golf course in the later 1950s and a strip mall was added in the. Later in 2006 a North Palm Beach village resident, Jack Nicklaus, redesigned the town's golf course and reopened later that same year.
The Twin City Mall, an enclosed shopping center, opened in 1970 as Palm Beach County's second enclosed shopping mall and later was demolished in the 1990s and replaced by a strip mall as it has been updated and is still used today anchored by a Publix grocery chain.
Today North Palm Beach consists of 5.8 square miles with 2.2 square miles being water. Several beautiful homes have been built as waterfront homes on the cul-de-sacs with the Intracoastal Waterway flowing next to the land, piers, and marinas nearby.
Boating and fishing as some of the favorite activities of residents of this area. Some of the homes have their own boat slips to keep a boat within easy navigation to the ocean's abundant fishing opportunities.
